Description

The 2016 High School Counselor Workshop will provide high school guidance counselors and college access professionals with Federal and State regulations and guidelines pertaining to student financial aid application procedures and programs. The training will focus on the following topics:

  • Changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); including the new Prior-Prior-Year guidelines for 2017-18.

  • Federal aid programs and eligibility; including the student loan process and repayment options.

  • FAFSA guidance and resources when working with special populations.

  • Communicating special circumstances to the financial aid office.

  • State aid programs and eligibility; including MET/MESP.

  • MiSSG Web portal access information and demonstration.

  • College access resources; including MI Student Aid Outreach, Michigan College Access Network (MCAN), and High School Counselor Best Practices.


This free training is sponsored by the Michigan Department of Treasury - Student Financial Services Bureau in partnership with the Michigan Student Financial Aid Association and will be hosted at 40 locations across the State of Michigan. Each of the host sites will offer institutional based resources which may also include a campus tour. We hope you will consider taking advantage of this opportunity to learn more about student financial aid programs. As in the past, we are seeking approval for this workshop to meet the requirements for State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECH) via partnership with Grand Valley State University.

Organized by

MI Student Aid, locateded within the Michigan Department of Treasury, is comprised for three division areas: 529 Programs (MET/MESP), Student Scholarships and Grants (SSG), and Student Loan Repayment Programs.  We encourage students to pursue postsecondary education by providing equality of access to student financial resources and information.  Through the administration of various student financial assistance programs, students receive the guidance and funding necessary to pursue their educational goals.
